Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II established the city of Jaipur , after he shifted his capital from Amber Fort which lies 11 kilometers from this city. His decision of shifting the capital was primarily because Amber Fort located on the Aravalli Ranges wasn’t equipped enough to handle the rising population and subsequent water crisis. The Maharaja, thereafter founded Jaipur , the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan in the year 1727 , who rules the state through 1699 – 1744. The king intended to construct the first planned city of northern India and hence appointed one of the finest Bengali Brahmin Scholar Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, to plan and design the layout for the new city. The city of jaipur took approximately 4 years to build. In due course several palaces, roads, schools and colleges were built turning the city into one of the most prosperous lands in the vicinity. The city even had its first Sanskrit college and a womens college , which was one of its first kind during past times. During Prince of Wales visits to Jaipur , the city was painted in pink , which is why it got its name ‘The Pink City’.
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II had been particularly instrumental in developing some deep bonds with the Mughal, thereby ensuring that the new city is under no eminent threats. Industries has been booming since then with the primary business centered around marble and stone sculptures , which still happens to be one of the most famous export item for the state of Rajasthan. Later the Ramgarh Lake was built by Maharaja Ram Singh to supply water to the expanding city, which was gradually turning into a commercial hub, attracting businessmen from other adjoining cities. Soon after India won her independence from the British dominance, that Jaipur merged with neighboring cities of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner to form Rajasthan , the largest state of India with Jaipur as the capital. Today Jaipur is considered to be an epicenter of Historical glory and architectural marvel. The city attracts millions of visitors every year from national and international origin.
