And other was built at Ujjain in 1734, Varanasi in 1737, Mathura in 1738 and the earliest in Delhi in 1724. The monument was made to measure the local time, the sun's declination, altitude, the declination of stars, planets and to determine eclipses.
This is the largest and the best preserved of the five observatories built by Jai Singh II in different parts of the country. This observatory consisting of outsized astronomical instruments is still in use.
Jantar Mantar was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh between 1728 and 1734. It is the most famous of five observatories built by the Maharaja and is situated near the gate of the City Palace, Jaipur. Considered as the largest stone observatory in the world, Jantar Mantar shows the passion of Maharaja Jai Singh for astronomy and is a grand celebration of astronomical science. The specialty of this place is that each instrument here serves a particular function and gives the most accurate reading.
